Who Taught You How to See Yourself?

Before you learned how to solve an equation, write an essay, or pass an examination, you learned what you believed about yourself. Maybe someone told you that you were intelligent. Maybe a teacher noticed that you were unusually creative. Maybe someone repeatedly pointed out that you were “too sensitive,” “not good at maths,” “quiet,” “difficult,” or “not confident enough.” Some of those words may have stayed with you far longer than the lesson itself. This Teacher’s Day, it is worth looking beyond the teachers who taught us subjects and remembering the people who influenced the way we saw ourselves.

Teachers Do More Than Teach

A teacher may spend only a few hours with a child each week, yet a few words can stay for years. A child who hears, “You have a way with words,” may begin to trust their voice. Another who repeatedly hears, “You never get this right,” may begin avoiding challenges altogether. The difference is not always about the words themselves, but it is about what a young mind concludes from them. These beliefs can become part of a person’s identity, like;

  • “I am capable.”
  • “I am not good enough.”
  • “My ideas matter.”
  • “I should stay quiet.”
  • “I can learn.”
  • “I am simply not good at this.”

The Labels We Carry Into Adulthood

Some of the labels we received as children continue to influence us long after we leave school. The “shy child” may become an adult who avoids speaking up. The “troublemaker” may become someone who constantly questions whether they are acceptable. The “perfect student” may grow into an adult who struggles with mistakes. The “responsible one” may find it difficult to ask for help. The “average student” may stop trying for opportunities that feel out of reach.

At some point, the label stops sounding like something someone said about you, rather starts sounding like something you believe about yourself. That is where conditioning becomes powerful.

A Teacher Can Become an Inner Voice

Think about a teacher whose words you still remember. What did they make you believe about yourself? Did they make you feel capable? Seen? Creative? Safe to make mistakes? Or did you spend years trying to prove that their judgment was wrong? Sometimes, the teacher is no longer present, but their voice remains. You make a mistake and hear, “You should have known better.” You speak up and hear, “Don’t embarrass yourself.” You try something new and hear, “You’re probably not good at this.” This is why the influence of a teacher can extend far beyond the classroom. Their words can become part of our internal dialogue.

The Nervous System Remembers How We Were Treated

Learning is not only intellectual. Children also learn through emotional experiences. A classroom where mistakes are met with ridicule can teach a child to associate learning with fear. A classroom where curiosity is encouraged can teach the child that exploration is safe. Repeated criticism may create hypervigilance around performance, and repeated encouragement can create greater willingness to try, fail, and try again. This does not mean one teacher determines a person’s entire future, but that we are shaped by many experiences. Early relationships can influence the emotional patterns through which we approach learning, authority, failure, and ourselves.

The Teacher Who Saw Something You Could Not Yet See

Most of us can remember at least one person who believed in us before we fully believed in ourselves. Maybe they encouraged you to enter a competition, asked you to lead something, displayed your work, stayed back after class to help, or simply said, “I know you can do this.” Sometimes, that moment becomes a turning point, not because the teacher magically changed everything. Because someone offered you a different possibility of who you could become, and sometimes, that is exactly what a young person needs.

But What If Your Experience Was Different?

  1. Not everyone has a positive school experience. Some people carry painful memories of humiliation, comparison, rejection, or being misunderstood. If that is your story, Teacher’s Day does not require you to romanticise it. You can acknowledge what happened without allowing it to define you. Ask yourself:
    • What did I start believing about myself because of those experiences?
    • Is that belief still true?
    • Where does it show up in my life today?
    • What would I believe about myself if I had never been given that label?

You Can Rewrite the Inner Lesson

You cannot change what a teacher said to you twenty years ago, but you can change the meaning you continue to give those words. If someone once told you that you were not creative, you can create now. If you were made to feel that mistakes meant failure, you can learn to see mistakes as information. If you were constantly compared with someone else, you can stop using another person’s life as the measurement of your own. Growth often begins when you stop asking, “Why did they see me that way?” and start asking, “How do I choose to see myself now?”

Five Ways to Change the Way You See Yourself

  1. Identify an old label. Think of one description you have carried since childhood, and write it down. Then ask whether it is a fact or simply an old interpretation.
  2. Find evidence that challenges it. If you believe you are “not confident,” remember the times you spoke up despite being afraid. If you believe you are “bad at learning,” remember something difficult you eventually mastered. Your history contains evidence that your old story may be incomplete.
  3. Separate feedback from identity. Someone can criticise your behaviour without defining your character. “I made a mistake” is very different from “I am a failure.” Be mindful of that distinction.
  4. Speak to yourself differently. Notice your internal dialogue when something goes wrong. Would you speak to a child you cared about in the same way? If not, change the conversation.
  5. Become the teacher you needed. Offer someone else the encouragement you once needed. Tell them what you see in them, give them room to make mistakes. Celebrate effort, curiosity, and courage, because sometimes healing happens when we create for others what we once needed ourselves.

A Teacher’s Day Reflection Ritual

Take a sheet of paper and divide it into two sections.

  • On one side, write: “What I was taught to believe about myself.”
  • On the other, write: “What I choose to believe about myself now.”
  • Do not try to make the second list sound impressive. Make it honest.

If you were taught to stay small, perhaps you choose to take up space. If you were taught that mistakes make you inadequate, perhaps you choose to see them as part of learning. If you were taught that your worth depends on achievement, perhaps you choose to recognise your worth beyond performance.

Read the second list aloud, and let your own voice become stronger than the voices you have carried for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Can a teacher really influence how a child sees themselves?

Yes. Teachers are important figures during formative years, and repeated feedback can influence a child’s confidence, motivation, and beliefs about their abilities.

Q2. Can negative experiences with teachers affect adults later in life?

They can. Some people continue to carry beliefs about their intelligence, confidence, creativity, or worth that were shaped by earlier experiences.

Q3. Does one teacher determine a child’s self-image?

No. Self-perception develops through many relationships and experiences, including family, peers, teachers, culture, and personal experiences.

Q4. What if I still carry a negative label from childhood?

Start by questioning whether the label is still accurate. Look for evidence from your adult life that shows a more complete picture of who you are.

Q5. What makes a teacher truly memorable?

Often, it is not just what they taught. It is how they made students feel about their ability to learn, explore, make mistakes, and grow.

This Teacher’s Day, honour the teachers who helped you discover your abilities. And if you carry an old belief that once came from someone else’s judgment, remember this; the person who first taught you how to see yourself does not have to be the person who gets the final word.

Priceless words of honour.

I have known Dr Chandni for only 6 months. Yet today I consider her part of my family and my being. When I met her, I was exhausted with life and with myself. Not only did her session uplift & transform my physical body but I was grounded like I havent been in 8 years. Highly knowledgeable, able to answer your deepest questions, full of light and exuberance, I havent seen any energy healing so significant and long lasting. Im privileged to receive wellness from her and I know that Im never alone. My association with her is for life and her specialness is above the heavens for me.

I was part of the session with Dr. Chandni Tugnait and so many friends asked me about my experience. The following analogy reflects some parts of the experience -The best of Buddhas disciple gave their quantifiable findings but when it came to Andanda, his closest one, he had tears in his eyes and responded in a single sentence – “I don’t know”.Buddha responded emotively, you have me in you. One has to experience it to believe in the healing process in totality.
Thanks a lot for your contribution Chandni

At times i wonder where does she keep it all. Such compassion – non judgmental, ever accessible, invaluable. It’s got to be a fountain within her that flows incessantly for the wary soul. No matter what your wound is, the magical waters of this fountain can cure all. And it was magic that got me to this fountain. For I had neither met her nor known her, at-least not in this lifetime! The first time i spoke to her, her compassion cut through my dense energy.

Every teacher educates but only a few enlighten and Chandni ma’am is one of them. Besides having outstanding teaching methods, she is also very skilful and enthusiastic. And the best part is she never settles for what she and her students have accomplished. I owe a lot to her in terms of motivation, enlightenment and most importantly for making me a good human being. Her words of motivation “YOU ARE BETTER THAN THE BEST” always are a major source of ENCOURAGEMENT..

Ms. Chandni is a fine young lady who simply touched my heart during my visit to India. Although she is my daughter’s age but the ease with which she handled our group of 40 odd people from different countries and different cultures, left me spellbound. English was never a problem for me but this young girl, who I proudly call my teacher, taught me some very interesting things. I wish you the best of luck in everything that you do. Smile as often as you can. May the Lord bless you!
